What is EuroMillions?

EuroMillions is the world's most popular transnational lottery — a joint venture launched on 7 February 2004 by France's Française des Jeux, Spain's Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, and the UK's National Lottery. It is now played across 9 participating countries with two draws every week.

The game uses a unique dual-barrel format: players select 5 main numbers from 1–50, plus 2 Lucky Stars from a separate pool of 1–12. All 7 numbers must match to win the jackpot. With a minimum jackpot of €17 million (~AUD $27M) that can roll up to a cap of €250 million (~AUD $400M), EuroMillions regularly produces the largest lottery prizes on Earth.

💡 Biggest EuroMillions Jackpot Ever: €250 million (approximately AUD $400 million) — reached twice in 2025. The jackpot cap was first hit in March 2025, won by a single ticket from Austria. The cap was reached again just three months later in June 2025, won by a single Irish ticket holder.

How to Play EuroMillions — Step by Step
1

Choose Your 5 Main Numbers

Select 5 numbers from 1 to 50. Use your own favourite numbers or choose Lucky Dip (QuickPick) for a randomly generated selection. All numbers have an equal statistical probability of being drawn.

2

Choose Your 2 Lucky Stars

Select 2 separate Lucky Star numbers from a pool of 1 to 12. Lucky Stars are drawn from a completely separate barrel to the main numbers — they operate as a second game within the same ticket, required for the top 9 of 13 prize tiers.

3

Choose How Many Lines & Draws

You can play multiple lines on a single ticket for more chances. Choose a single draw or multi-draw entry. System entries (up to 10 main numbers) are available through The Lottery Office in Australia.

4

Purchase Your Ticket

Australians cannot buy EuroMillions tickets directly in Australia. To play, use an authorised lottery concierge service such as The Lottery Office, which purchases a corresponding ticket on your behalf in a participating country (Austria).

5

Watch the Draw — Tuesday & Friday

Draws take place at approximately 9:05 PM CET (Paris) every Tuesday and Friday — that's approximately 6:05 AM AEST Wednesday & Saturday. Results are published online at euro-millions.com and via SmartLotto by 7 AM AEST.

6

Claim Your Prize

Non-jackpot prizes are automatically paid to your nominated account by your concierge service. Jackpot prizes require coordination with the operator — The Lottery Office ensures full prize payment regardless of amount.

🌏 Playing from Australia: EuroMillions is not directly available to purchase in Australia. SmartLotto works with authorised Australian lottery concierge providers to let you participate legally and securely from anywhere in Australia.
Understanding Lucky Stars

Lucky Stars are the feature that makes EuroMillions unique. They are drawn from a completely separate barrel containing 12 balls (1–12), independent of the main 50-ball draw. You must select 2 Lucky Stars per entry.

⭐ Star

Lucky Stars are required to win 9 of the 13 prize tiers — including the jackpot (Match 5+2). They are also what sets the prize tiers apart: matching 5 main + 1 Lucky Star is Division 2, while matching 5 main + 0 Lucky Stars drops to Division 3. Your Lucky Star selection can significantly influence which prize tier you land in.

Lucky Star Tip: Because there are only 12 Lucky Star numbers (compared to 50 main numbers), the odds of matching Lucky Stars are significantly better. Matching both Lucky Stars and 3 main numbers (1 in 314) is far easier than matching 5 main numbers alone (1 in 2,118,760).
🗺️
Participating Countries

EuroMillions is officially available in 9 European countries. All players in participating countries contribute to the same shared jackpot pool:

🇦🇹Austria
🇧🇪Belgium
🇫🇷France
🇮🇪Ireland
🇱🇺Luxembourg
🇵🇹Portugal
🇪🇸Spain
🇨🇭Switzerland
🇬🇧United Kingdom
🌏 For Australian Players: Australians participate via authorised lottery concierge operators (e.g. The Lottery Office) who purchase tickets in Austria on your behalf. Winnings are paid to you in AUD regardless of the original prize currency.
🏆

Jackpot, Rollover & Cap Rules

⚡ The EuroMillions Jackpot Progression

Minimum Start
€17M
Typical Large Rollover
€125M+
Maximum Cap (Jackpot Must Be Won)
€250M

Once the €250M cap is reached, the jackpot holds for up to 4 draws. If not won, it rolls down to Division 2 winners.

  • Guaranteed minimum jackpot of €17 million (~AUD $27M) every draw
  • Jackpot rolls over to the next draw when not won — grows with each rollover
  • Maximum jackpot cap is €250 million (~AUD $400M) — the highest in the world
  • Once the cap is reached and not won for 4 consecutive draws, it cascades down to Division 2
  • The cap itself increases by €10M each time it's reached and won, until hitting the €250M ceiling
  • All EuroMillions prizes are paid as a single tax-free lump sum (except in Spain, Portugal and Switzerland)
  • Australian winners receive prizes in AUD via their concierge operator — no tax applied in Austria (where tickets are purchased)
💰 The Rolldown Advantage: When the jackpot cascades down because the cap isn't won, Division 2 prizes can jump to tens of millions of euros each — making cap-draw tickets exceptionally high value for lower-division players.

Superdraws are special EuroMillions events held 3–4 times per year where the jackpot is set at a guaranteed minimum of €130 million — regardless of the previous draw's jackpot. Ticket cost and game rules remain identical. The Superdraw boost comes directly from the EuroMillions Reserve Fund.

  • Superdraws set the jackpot at a minimum of €130 million (~AUD $205M) guaranteed
  • Ticket price and odds remain exactly the same as regular draws
  • Special Anniversary Draws also occur to celebrate EuroMillions milestones — similar format to Superdraws
  • Double Jackpot events occasionally double prizes across multiple tiers for selected Friday draws
  • SmartLotto subscribers receive advance alert notifications for every upcoming Superdraw
📅 When is the Next Superdraw? Superdraws are announced by EuroMillions operators approximately 2 weeks in advance. Subscribe to SmartLotto alerts to be notified the moment a Superdraw date is confirmed.

October 2004 — Expansion to 9 Countries
Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland all joined the consortium, growing the shared prize pool dramatically and increasing jackpot growth rates.

Tuesday draws were added alongside the original Friday draw, doubling annual draw frequency to 104 per year. Lucky Star pool expanded from 9 to 11 numbers.
September 2016 — Current Format
Lucky Star pool expanded from 11 to 12 numbers, reducing jackpot odds from 1 in 117 million to the current 1 in 139.8 million. The minimum jackpot was raised to €17 million. This format remains in use today.
February 2020 — Rolling Jackpot Cap
